Our 10km Mackinders Hike trail starts at the Met Station (3,048m ASL), cutting through the marshy vertical bog in the lower moorland zone, past the upper moorland zone, dotted with lobelias and other beautiful montane vegetation, to get to the magnificent Teleki Valley.
The northern moorlands of the Aberdares Ranges accessed through Shamata Gate, offer some of the best trekking in Kenya. Very few hikers ever come to explore this delightfully isolated wilderness, with landmarks like Dragon’s Teeth, Ol Donyo Le Satima summit, and Table Mountain.

Mountain Climbing FAQS
The best times to climb Mt. Kenya and Kilimanjaro tend to be the warmest and driest months January, February and September June July August are also good months. However temperatures and weather are quite unpredictable and can change drastically based on the time of the day and altitude.its best to Avoid the long rainy season, from end of March to early june.
Each Route has different characteristics which may or may not appeal to you. However to get the most out of your Trek, consider the difficulty, and Scenery. Other factors that should be considered are your Age, fitness level. Medical condition, experience at high altitude; degree of motivation and any other special consideration. Please kindly consider your guides Advice regarding this.
There are minimum days recommended for each route or a combination of routes. The more days you spend on the mountain, the better your chances for successfully reaching the summit. Do not book the minimum number of days, chances are, you will not enjoy your climb nor will you reach the top. Again, the guide’s advice will come in handy.
Follow the gear List and resist the temptation to bring more. You won’t need it and it is just extra weight that you or the porters must carry. Upon completion of the climb, you’ll be surprised to realize that what you needed is not much anyway.
Altitude sickness is potentially fatal. However, most climbers will get some form of mild acute mountain sickness (AMS) While on the mountain. Our guide will monitor you closely during the duration of your climb. However, you should be aware of your of the symptoms of mild, moderate and severe AMS. And you must inform your guide of any symptoms immediately. Never try to hide your symptoms in order to continue climbing. There’s always the possibility that the impact of AMS will ultimately sabotage your summit attempt.
Not many people have been to such high altitudes before. Therefore, climbers should have a medical check prior to attempting to climb Mt. Kenya and Kilimanjaro. Consult your health care provider to determine which immunizations and medications to obtain for your travels to east Africa. A valid passport, six months prior to the expiration, is required to East Africa. Climbers should also obtain medical insurance cover and travel insurance cover that covers trip cancellation.
Hiking Mount Kenya and Mount Kilimanjaro with a professional and experienced guide is highly recommended.
Climbing Mount Kenya is safe. However, preparing for high altitudes, long treks and steep ascent is important.
Yes, rainfall and snow are common during the wet seasons March to May.
With preparation, climbing to point Lenana is visible for beginners. However, if you want to summit Batian or Nelion, you’ll need rock climbing experience.
Tipping is not required, however it is always received. We don’t publish our tipping guidelines here, however when you book a trek with us we will discuss tipping protocols and provide a written overview on what is appropriate so you and others in your party can be prepared to tip if the trek meets your expectations.
Early and often. Although you don’t need to be an Olympian a trek is no walk in the park. Your trek will be more pleasurable the more effort you can put in to preparing if you are not a regular athlete (or out of practice). Exercise physiologists suggest five aerobics workout of 30-60 minutes a week, coupled with strength training with focus on legs and core for these treks, in the gym a stair-master, treadmill on an incline, or elliptical machine can be a great workout. Of course, a day on the trails is not an hour at the gym, so ideally on weekends or whenever you a large block of time you should go on an extended hike with a 15-20 lb pack on your back. Start with 2–3-hour hikes and work up to 5-6 hours or more.
